The role of Trustee does not have any financial remuneration; however, reasonable expenses for travel may be claimed.


Board meetings will be held in London.

Time Commitment

There will be four quarterly meetings per year.  Physical presence at meetings is ideal, although video conferencing is also available for those who are unable to attend.

Purpose of the Post:

You will maintain an overview of our financial affairs, ensuring the financial viability of the organisation. You will contribute prompt consideration and guidance about financial matters to both the Board members and staff.  You will also ensure that proper financial records and procedures are maintained.

Statutory Responsibilities

  • Ensure that we pursue our objectives as defined in our governing documents.
  • Ensure that we use our resources exclusively in pursuance of our objects: the charity must not spend money on activities which are not included in its own objects, no matter how worthwhile or charitable those activities may seem.
  • Ensure that we protect our charitable status. An important aspect is to ensure that our resources are only spent on charitable activities.
  • Ensure that we comply with our governing documents, charity and company law, other relevant legislation and regulations, and follows guidance issued by the Charity Commission and relevant regulators.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Overseeing, approving and presenting budgets, accounts and financial statements.
  2. Ensuring that Muslim Aid’s financial resources meet its present and future needs.
  3. Ensuring that the charity has an appropriate reserves policy.
  1. The timely preparation and presentation of financial reports to the board (task delegated to the Finance team).
  2. Ensuring that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place.
  3. Advising on the financial implications of Muslim Aid’s strategic plans.
  4. Ensuring Muslim Aid’s compliance with legislation.
  5. Ensuring equipment and assets are adequately maintained and insured.
  6. Ensuring that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by funders and the relevant statutory bodies.
  7. If external scrutiny of accounts is required, ensuring that the accounts are scrutinised in the manner required (independent examination or audit) and any recommendations are implemented.
  8. Keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities.
  9. Contributing to Muslim Aid’s fundraising strategy.
  10. Making a formal presentation of the accounts at the annual general meeting and drawing attention to important points in a coherent and easily understandable way.
  11. Working with the Board’s chair and vice chair to ensure the smooth running of procedures.
